My Name is Trevor Barry. I am a saxophonist: I believe in the saxophone. (I also play the saxophone: I'm a sax player). 🎷
I received my very-vintage H-COUF alto sax when I was 10 years old, from my grandmother. It is the best birthday gift I have ever recieved in my life. Even now that she is gone, this old piece of brass and pearls is the gift that keeps on giving in my life. Thanks, Gubby!
More recently in 2025, a decade after inheriting it from my late father, I sold my 1984 Pace Arrow motorhome, and that helped pay for a professional tenor sax, a P Lauriat le bravo, which is now my new favourite. You would love it, Dad.
I studied privately from a young age, until a few years ago when Stan Karp passed away. I also studied under Pat La Barbera & Brad Turner. One of the greatest nights of my life was hanging out with Tom Gould and Corey "cellar live" Weeds at Stan's celebration of life at Frankie's, sharing stories about this Capilano guru legend who grew up in Brooklyn, matured in LA, then blessed us all by moving to Vancouver.
I have taught many students over the years, from the ages of 8 to 80, beginners to buskers, in-person & online. In recent years I have taught high school reed players at St. Michael's University School and filled in for their on-campus night band director.
I might be able to take on more students, email Saxy Saanich at trevorbarry.ca
I have played the Chan Centre in the UBC honour jazz band under Fred Stride; as a street entertainer busker at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, at Frankie's jazz club on stage with the Sharon Minemoto Quartet, at FernFest with Jeremy Caradonna's "Boogie Howzer", across town with Nick LaRiviere's Jive and my own combos and quintet "Casino Nite 5" and of course, my favourite folks: the Best Coast Big Band at Hermann's, music-in-the-parks, the CPO mess hall, Qualicum Canada Day, etc.
I'm super proud to have a trumpet/trombone brass-boss for a teenaged son, and a daughter starting up on flute in middle school. Some day soon: The Barry Family Band!

In my spur-of-the-moment 2018 bid for seat on Saanich Council, I accidentally became the sax player busking for votes around town
Because spittin' at the mic about #SmartSaanich municipal policy reform is bound to impress the electorate, and, the ladies. Right?
I spent a lot of #7pmCheer evenings during the early pandemic playing alto, tenor, often accompanied by my kids
2 days after the 2018 municipal election, I stood and played for an hour at the cold corner of Saanich and Pat Bay (uptown) for the morning commuters.
Back in my university days, at the UBC Place Vanier "Casino Nite" annual dormitory event, this on-campus non-B.Mus-group was born, and went on to play a few banquets and weddings.

...and awesome.
(this is actually fairly challenging)
Me and my BCBB friends a couple years ago, at the oldest remaining jazz club in Canada.
This was my very first year playing in a group again after many years hiatus (e.g. starting a family).
