In 2017, like so many in town, I mourned the sudden unexpected loss of Councillor Vic Derman.
Later that year, there was a byelection to replace him; in which I couldn't narrow things down to only one candidate for the sole vacancy, so I supported both Rebecca Mersereau and Rob Wickson.
These two (unsuccessful) candidates ran again in 2018, where I intended to (and did) support them both in the 2018 local general. Ultimately Rob lost to both frontrunners for Mayor: incumbant Richard Atwell, and then-councillor Fred Haynes who become mayor. Rebecca, of course, had the most successful Saanich election campaign in history.
But along the way, they each, and other unnamed folks, and just my friends and community members, encouraged me to throw my hat into the ring. So I did. At the end of August. On a whim.
The rest, they say, is history. I didn't win (that was not in the cards), but a spark and a passion and a commitment was born. ARCHIVED 2018+ Web Materials exist here.
JUNE UPDATES:
I have taken leaves of absence from my career job as a government policy advisor on climate action and low-carbon transportation and communities; as well as finished teaching saxophone in the classroom for the year. And I am nearly wrapped up consulting work with the Reconciling Ways of Knowing Forum (Indigenous Knowledge & Western Science).
I have stepped away, taken leave, from executive positions on society boards around town, for the foreseeable.
Before handing presidential duties over to my VP at #NorthQuadra Community Association (NQCA), I ran a successful* community celebration week of activities and festivities, especially engaging our local NQ small business community.
*the major event at Beckwith Park was executed perfectly, but spoilt by a deluge of rain on May 15th. So, after stepping away from the NQCA, and instead with personal, network, and small business support, I financed a "re-do" event on Sunday June 12th. It was a smashing success. There are too many people to thank, but I will emphasise the generosity of the entire Sidhu family at the Royal Tandoor Indian Cuisine (for donating their time and food, twice!, to our community). And of course, a shout-out to my dear friends and fellow musicians in the Best Coast Big Band.
I am conducting some public engagement with Saanich residents, consulting with fellow community leaders (in Saanich and the CRD), political advisors, and taking some time for self-reflection and checking in with family.
UPDATE:
So, What's happening in 2022, Trev?
As of writing, in early June, I...
have stepped away from my role as President, #NorthQuadra Community Association, for the foreseeable; along with other executive/board positions I hold in town.
Although I will continue to serve on citizen advisory committees of Saanich Council, such as the Active Transprotation (ATAC) under chair Mersereau; as we are still busy doing lots of work.
am hosting a large COMMUNITY PICNIC EVENT - Beckwith Park SUNDAY 12-4pm on June 12th.
...sadly it will be my last regular participation with the Best Coast Big Band for the summer.
I continue to meet with community leaders: CA presidents past and present, former & current MP/MLAs, Small business leaders, Schools & PACs, non-profit societies, ecological & climate experts, advocacy organisations, urban designers, other CRD candidates, etc. I intend to continue increasing this engagement.
It sounds like you will launch a campaign. If so, when? and how can we subscribe to updates, and/or get involved?
For me, the intention to run for Council and the CRD is a very serious proposition.
Unlike 2018, where I decided to run on a bit of whim, the decision this time would need to be based on
meaningful discussions with family, friends, and colleagues.
setting goals, expectations, boundaries, systems, operational procedures
moving the political dial toward meaningful progress on public policy issues, rooted in data and evidence, and avoiding the pitfalls of both woke virtual signalling on the 'left', and hollow populist talking points on the 'right'.
Anybody paying attention in 2018 will have recognised that I was the only candidate with a comprehensive policy platform. Anyone paying attention since (especially on Monday Nights) will have observed a pugnatious policy wonk, passionately pointing out flaws and false compromises to budget and bylaw procedures. I don't lack a fulsome set of positions and "in-the-lane-ideas" for notices of motion, etc. BUT, the world (incl. Saanich) has changed since 2018. And I want to make sure that I have exhaustively engaged leaders and everyday citizens in myriad arenas of community life before "printing" my platform, and carrying that message forward with fierce diplomacy.
